"This is one of those things where I now think: how did I ever manage without it? For anyone with sensitive or eczema-prone skin: don't underestimate your pajamas. I really wish I had discovered these much sooner." - Linda

Healthy sleepwear

Healthy sleepwear

Sleep is one of the most powerful tools your body has for recovery. While you rest, your muscles repair, your immune system strengthens, and your brain processes emotions, clears waste, and consolidates memories. The quality of that recovery depends heavily on one thing most people overlook: what you're sleeping in.

Adults are recommended to get between 7 and 9 hours of sleep per night, yet around 30% don't reach that threshold. One underappreciated reason? Temperature regulation. During every sleep cycle, your body briefly surfaces to check in: too warm? Too cold? Bladder full? Anything unusual in the environment? If something feels off, you don't fully return to deep sleep. When everything is fine, you drift back down without even noticing. Clothing and bedding that trap heat or moisture disrupt this process, and synthetic fabrics are often the problem.

The problem with synthetic fabrics

Many sleepwear items that feel soft and comfortable are made, at least in part from polyester or polyamide. These are plastics. And while they may feel fine against your skin, your body is in contact with them for seven or more hours every night.

Your skin is your largest organ. Surrounding it in plastic for a third of your life is not without consequence.

Synthetic textiles shed microplastic fibres, tiny particles that enter your body through inhalation, skin contact, and through the food and water you consume. They have been found in human lungs, liver, kidneys, brain tissue, and even in the placenta.

Research suggests these particles may trigger inflammation and oxidative stress in the body. The science is still developing, and direct causal links are not yet conclusively established, but the signals are worth paying attention to.

What's encouraging is that reducing exposure seems to make a difference. Research highlighted in the documentary The Plastic Detox (with dr. Shanna Swan) found that men who cut back on plastic use showed measurable improvements in sperm quality within around three months.

Your skin is your largest organ. Surrounding it in plastic for a third of your life is not without consequence.

Textile is, after car tyres and packaging, one of the largest sources of microplastic pollution in the Netherlands, and globally, the numbers are striking: more than half of all plastic ever produced has been made since the year 2000.

What to look for instead

The good news is that natural, plant-based fibres offer a genuinely better alternative, especially for sleepwear and bedding, where skin contact is sustained. Look for 100% (organic) cotton, linen and hemp (plant-based).

Wool is another natural option, though it comes with its own environmental considerations as an animal product.

Check your textiles

You don't need to overhaul your wardrobe overnight. Start with the clothes you wear most and take a close look at your bedding and sleepwear. These are the pieces that spend the most time against your skin. Check the labels. Blends that include polyester or polyamide, even partially, can contribute to the problem.

 Check your labels on:

  • Polyester (PET)
  • Nylon (polyamide)
  • Acrylic (PAN)
  • Elastane / Spandex / Lycra
  • Polypropylene (PP)
  • Polyethylene (PE)
  • Viscose (Semi - synthetic)
  • Modal (Semi - synthetic)
  • Lyocell (TENCEL™) (Semi - synthetic)

Beyond textiles, it's worth taking a broader look at plastic in your daily environment: your kitchen tools, your bathroom, your food packaging. Every small change counts.

But if there's one place to start, it's where you spend a third of your life: in bed. Sleeping well matters. Sleeping clean matters just as much.
