Why 100% linen is good for eczema and sensitive skin

Why 100% linen is good for eczema and sensitive skin

For people with eczema or sensitive skin, clothing can make a bigger difference than we often realise. It's not just skincare or diet that plays a role — the fabrics you wear every day, and especially every night, directly against your skin matter too.

Adults sleep an average of 7 to 9 hours a night. Babies and young children sleep even longer. That means your skin spends a significant part of the day in contact with pyjamas, bedding, and sleeping bags. We don't always stop to think about the fact that our skin is our largest organ, and that everything it comes into contact with can have an impact.

With eczema, heat is often one of the biggest triggers. When the skin becomes warm and clammy, itching, redness, and irritation can increase. That's why natural, breathable materials like 100% linen and cotton are often a wonderful choice for sensitive skin. Linen is known for its temperature-regulating properties: it helps draw heat away from the body, absorbs moisture quickly, and allows the skin to breathe more freely. It's also naturally hypoallergenic and antibacterial.

Many people shop by touch. If something feels beautifully soft, it must be good for the skin, right? But very soft fabrics are often synthetic, or contain blends with polyester, viscose, or polyamide. These materials can trap heat and increase irritation. Especially with eczema or contact allergies, it's worth taking a closer look at what's actually in the fabric.

When shopping online, you'll often see descriptions like "with linen" or "linen" — but that doesn't always mean what you'd expect. Often it turns out to be a blend, combined with synthetic fibres. This can mean the fabric breathes less well and feels more unsettled against the skin.

At A Place Called Calm, we deliberately choose 100% organic linen, which is quite rare. Our fabric isn't chemically softened either, but washed using a natural enzyme wash: a biological process in which enzymes gently soften the fabric in a mild way. This means no unnecessary harmful substances are left behind in the fibres. Kinder to your skin, and kinder to the planet.

Why linen is a great choice for sensitive skin:

  • Breathable and temperature-regulating
  • Helps prevent trapped heat and clammy skin
  • Naturally hypoallergenic and antibacterial
  • Moisture-absorbing, taking up to 20% of its own weight in moisture without feeling damp
  • Gentle on sensitive skin and more sustainable by nature
  • Ideal for sleepwear, bedding, and baby sleeping bags
  • Sustainably produced in the Netherlands
  • Supports a calm and comfortable night's rest

The environment you sleep in matters too. Think about good ventilation in your bedroom, breathable sleepwear, and natural bedding like 100% linen, cotton, or a combination of the two. The better heat and moisture can escape, the calmer the skin often stays.

And perhaps rest itself is the most important thing of all. A regular rhythm, enough sleep, nourishing food, and gentle movement don't just support your energy, they support your body and skin too. Sometimes relief comes from the small, everyday choices.

Review - Linda:

I've had sensitive skin and eczema my whole life. That means constantly searching, constantly learning. Every day it becomes a little clearer what triggers flare-ups and what helps to keep my skin as calm as possible.

Honestly, I never thought a pair of pyjamas could make such a difference. I always slept in 100% cotton, convinced it was the best there was. Until the night I tried this linen pyjama from APCC.

That's when I realised just how much sleepwear can affect things. In these pyjamas, I wake up less often from itching, and my skin feels calmer, even throughout the day. Which makes complete sense, really, given that you spend most of the day actually wearing your pyjamas.

This is one of those things where I now think: how did I ever manage without it? For anyone with sensitive or eczema-prone skin: don't underestimate your pyjamas. I really wish I'd found these sooner.
