Why linen is the best fabric for sleep

Why linen is the best fabric for sleep

Finding the right linen for our sleepwear took months. We had one rule: 100% organic. Easier said than done.

Most linen fabrics are softened with chemical washes. Others use a “stonewash,” where stones tumble with the fabric to make it softer and more textured. Beautiful, yes but chemicals are not very gentle for the planet and skin.

We chose something different: a natural enzyme wash. It's a biological process that softens fibers without harming their strength. The result is linen that's soft from day one, but still gets better with time.

Finding our dream fabric

Finding our dream fabric wasn't easy. We were looking for an organic linen, ideally produced in the Netherlands or Belgium, in the right weight and fully certified organic.

Honestly: we had to make compromises. Our dream fabric simply didn't exist. Maybe one day we'll have it made exactly the way we envision it, but we had to start somewhere. For now, we're really happy with what we found. We just want to be open about it.

The one downside? Our fabric is woven in South Korea. Far away, with a footprint that comes with it. At the same time, the quality is exceptionally high, weaving faults are rare, which means almost no waste. According to our atelier, that's unusual.

The flax comes from different farms across Europe, spreading the risk of a failed harvest as climate change makes growing conditions less predictable.

What makes linen special?

Linen comes from flax. Flax grows without demanding much, it thrives on less fertile soil and needs little water, far less than cotton. Research by the European Confederation of Linen and Hemp found that a linen shirt uses only 6 liters of water in its lifetime, compared to 2,700 liters for cotton.

Here's why it works for sleep:

  • Temperature regulating - keeps you cool in summer, warm in winter
    • Perfect for those recovering from illness, when you need a lot of rest, what you wear matters
    • Also ideal during menopause, linen naturally helps keep your temperature balanced
  • Moisture absorbing - takes in up to 20% of its weight without feeling damp
  • Antibacterial - flax fibers naturally resist bacteria
  • Hypoallergenic - gentle for sensitive skin
  • Durable - gets softer the more you wear it

We say: softened by time. And because linen lasts for years: sleepwear for life.

Beyond the science

In ancient Egypt, linen was sacred. Priests wore it, pharaohs were wrapped in it for the afterlife. Many still believe linen carries a living energy.

Holistic research even suggests linen carries a natural energy frequency around 5000 hertz, a beautiful idea that your body might recharge as you sleep. While science hasn’t proven this, linen simply feels good on the body.

For us, choosing linen means choosing a slower rhythm. A material that breathes, lives, and improves over time.

When you sleep in linen, you're wrapping yourself in something pure and honest, a piece of nature that keeps getting better the longer you live with it.
